People become dependent on drugs and alcohol for many reasons, every person has their own story and their own road that took them there. One common thread most people share when they become dependent on alcohol and drugs is the emotional and physical affects dependency causes. No matter what the reasons are that an individual becomes dependent on alcohol or drugs and it doesn't matter how long it took them to get there, addiction affects self-esteem, relationships and eventually every aspect of your life if you don't seek help.
Just as every individual has their own reasons for becoming dependent on alcohol, drugs, and sometimes both, every person has to find their own solution or path to abstinence and recovery. There are many paths to recovery; it's important and crucial that every person finds the path that's right for them. When this happens life becomes bearable again, self-esteem increases, relationships can heal, and a person's quality of life improves.
Codependency affects a person in much the same way. Being co-dependent on another person destroys self-esteem, can cause depression, decreases your quality of life, and can destroy relationships.
