Drug abuse and alcoholism have enormous negative affects on the addict as well as his or her family and friends. Addiction also takes a negative toll on society as whole by causing a higher violent crime rate and the loss of individuals who could otherwise potentially be productive citizens. Rehab facilities seek to help addicts overcome the grip that alcoholism and drug abuse have on their lives. The primary goal of addiction recovery is to be free of the substances of addiction, minimize relapses, and handle relapses as quickly as possible before the situation worsens.

Because rehab facilities vary greatly in quality and the types of addiction treatment they offer, it is especially important to do careful research before choosing one. To begin the process of addiction recovery, the addict must first stop drinking and using drugs. Some say that the initial period of detox or withdrawal is the most difficult part of rehabilitation. Severe addicts who have been dealing with alcoholism and drug abuse for a long period of time will find it most difficult. Detox can be painful and make the addict extremely ill, so it should only be done in a licensed treatment facility with medical supervision. Some of the milder symptoms that most addicts experience during the detox period include anxiety, vomiting, and high blood pressure. Fortunately, this phase only lasts a few days.

There is much more work to be done after detox in an addiction treatment program. Rehabilitation is an ongoing process involving many aspects of one’s health, psychology, and lifestyle. Some addicts, primarily those who have only been dealing with addiction for a short period of time, are able to return to a normal lifestyle after the detox period in a rehab facility. However, the vast majority need further addiction treatment to deal with the emotional and mental aspects of addiction recovery.

Some individuals end up living in a transitional treatment center, where they have a basically free lifestyle but still receive rehabilitation support and loose monitoring among a community of other addicts. This allows them to stay in a relatively safe environment without many of the triggers at home, but there is still the addiction recovery guidance that they need to continue their alcohol rehabilitation and drug rehabilitation program.

Some of the addiction treatment services offered to people in North Carolina include alcohol treatment centers, support groups, intervention, dual diagnosis rehab centers, alternative medicines, rehab centers in hospitals, and much more.
