The Crisis Center in Iowa has come a long way, in 1970 a group of University of Iowa undergraduates needed to find a place they could go to that was safe to talk about problems they were having. They began working with Verne Kelley who was the director at the Community Mental Health Center during that time. The students established what is now known today as the Crisis Center of Johnson County.

Volunteers are the heart of this wonderful Crisis Center organization, the center is fueled by precious gifts of time, talent and treasure that comes from local people and organizations and the results the Crisis Center receives from helping people that are in crisis is inspiring.

How the Crisis Center on Johnson County Helps

When a situation becomes too hard and difficult for a person to deal with by them self, the Crisis Center is there to help. They provide immediate support through their Crisis Intervention, Food Bank & Emergency Assistance, and their Community Intervention Programs. A crisis can be anything, there may be problems with family or friends, a need for food, a financial emergency, a divorce, a serious illness, problems with a roommate, or school related stress, substance abuse issues, or suicidal feelings. When it comes to a crisis, the list is endless. Sometimes there are several small problems a person is going through and it has become overwhelming to the individual. The Crisis Center in Johnson County is there to help.

The Crisis Center has many dedicated volunteers that offer emotional or material assistance and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This community based organization is dedicated and successful because of the wonderful volunteers and financial and material support from people, organizations, churches, and businesses. Because of this wonderful support, the Crisis Center is able to serve more than 24,000 individual’s that are in need every year.
