Colorado has a wonderful nonprofit substance abuse treatment organization called the Arapahoe House that’s been helping people for over 40 years get the help they need to recover from drug and alcohol dependency and behavioral health issues. Every year the Arapahoe House helps over 15,000 people in their community find hope, healing and get the help they need for their addiction.

At the Arapahoe House you will find affordable, accessible and extremely effective substance abuse treatment for teens, women and their children, pregnant women, adults and families. The unique treatment programs at Arapahoe House empower people suffering from drug and alcohol dependency, offering them hope and recovery. There are more than 20 specialized substance abuse recovery programs in 13 Denver Colorado locations to help those in need.

Services Offered at Arapahoe House

Outpatient Treatment: There are 6 outpatient clinics offered that provide substance abuse and co-occurring mental health services. Day treatment and school based services are adapted to meet the needs of their clients individually. Their services include assessments, referrals, individual, group, and family therapy.

Residential treatment consists of comprehensive 24 hour inpatient care. The specialized programs included in residential treatment include adult, youth, pregnant and postpartum women, offenders, and transitional services. Intensive residential treatment is designed for clients in need of a more restrictive form of drug and alcohol treatment and the length of stay is flexible. Treatment for the client is based on stabilization and preparation for ongoing treatment in a lower level of care like Day Treatment or Outpatient services.

DUI education and therapy in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language for drug or alcohol related driving citations are offered at Arapahoe House. Arapahoe House in Colorado has six outpatient clinics located throughout the metro Denver area making DUI education accessible and convenient.

Detox consists of a non-hospital, social setting service for adults that facilitates safe withdrawal from alcohol or drugs and engages appropriate clients in further treatment. There are 3 adult social model detox programs that Arapahoe House operates and their main goal is to monitor their clients as they safely withdrawal from alcohol and drugs.

During detoxification the clients are motivated to seek further treatment that’s appropriate for the individual client. Detoxification can last from 12 hours to 3 days depending on the individual, when their withdrawal symptoms are over and their blood alcohol level is at .000 the detox process is completed.

Co-occurring Disorder

When a person suffers from a mental health issue at the same time they’re suffering from a substance use disorder this is call co-occurring. It’s extremely important to get help for the co-occurring disorder at the same time they’re getting treatment for substance use. It’s very common for people suffering from addiction to also have co-occurring disorders. 32% of the individuals treated for substance use disorders in Colorado have a co-occurring disorder too. In order for treatment to be successful, both substance use problems and mental health issues need to be treated at the same time.

Mental health issues that are common co-occurring disorders include anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
