A Review of Limen House-Women’s in Delaware

The Limen House consists of 2 halfway houses; there is one for men and one for women. Their residential therapeutic treatment program is designed for recovering alcoholics and addicts. Their clients have a safe place to stay as they work toward their full recovery from alcoholism and drug dependency.

The Limen House in Delaware began in the fall of 1968 as a halfway house for men who were alcoholics and addicts to recover from their illness. Limen is a Latin term that means threshold, meaning beginning or entering which fit beautifully with this facility because Limen House was for men who were looking for a new beginning. St Andrews Church in Wilmington had worked with alcoholics through AA and the St. Andrews social service program and that’s where the idea for a halfway house came from at that time.

It wasn’t easy but after working together with officials from the Alcoholic Commission, the Department of Mental Health, the Mental Health Association, Alcoholics Anonymous, and other agencies in the community they were able to facilitate rehabilitation of alcoholics. Because of how well their community accepted the concept of a halfway house they were able to open a Limen House for women which opened in August of 1973. Other halfway houses in Delaware and other states have modeled their halfway homes after the Limen House.

The Limen House is a non-profit organization; they are supported through private funds and contributions. These funds come from individuals, industries, foundations, service clubs and also churches. The philosophy of the Limen House is to be able to provide a temporary home for individuals that have no place to live. This wonderful organization celebrated their 40 year anniversary in 2009. The Limen House is responsible for helping addicts and alcoholics go back into society as productive and fully functioning members of society.

Clients at the Limen House learn how to take responsibility for their own choices. During their recovery process, the client is educated about their disease, a recovery program is developed for the client, and their self-esteem is improved. Each client’s treatment is uniquely developed for them personally in order to meet their individual needs. Residents of the Limen House program typically stay for a year.

A Review of The Coleman Institute in Indiana

The Coleman Institute which is run under Dr. Peter Coleman has been in existence since 1998. The programs they have developed for detoxification are unique and effective and have achieved remarkable results. Over a thousand patients have been treated for detoxification and their success rate is 98%. Their unique programs help detoxify and stabilize patients from the effects of opiates, alcohol, and benzodiazepines.

Dr. Coleman is a recovering addict as well as the National Medical Director and founder of the Coleman Institute. Dr. Coleman understands that the patient experiences deep and intense levels of pain when detoxing because he has gone through the same experiences. Dr. Coleman also understands the challenges and stress that goes along with sobriety, especially long-term sobriety.

It’s important to The Coleman Institute that the treatments they develop are safe, comfortable, and affordable for their patients. This important criteria the Coleman Institute has set in place enables those in need of treatment for substance abuse and addiction to take their first step towards recovery and a drug-free life. There are 6 locations throughout the United State the Coleman Institute has established.

  1. Richmond, Virginia
  2. Jeffersonville, Indiana
  3. Los Angeles, California
  4. San Francisco, California
  5. Chicago, Illinois
  6. Barboursville, West Virginia
  7. Seattle, Washington

The following Services Offered at The Coleman Institute

Accelerated Opiate Detox
There are many highly addictive opiate drugs that are abused and Heroin, Oxycontin and Methadone are abused the most. Percocet, Vicodin, Dilaudid, and Demerol are also extremely addictive and abused by many drug users. No matter what Opiate addiction a patient is suffering from The Coleman Institute in Indiana uses the Accelerated Detoxification Technique also referred to as ADT. This procedure removes all of the narcotics that have attached themselves to the patient’s brain receptors in a very comfortable, extremely safe, and quick way as possible. It’s important that a detox procedure gets rid of the drugs in the brain in order for the patient to be completely drug free.

There is no hospital stay required or general anesthesia when using the Accelerated Detoxification Technique; this is much safer, effective, less expensive and much easier on the patient. This procedure most of the time only takes 3 days as an outpatient instead of 7 days or longer in a hospital. The very small Naltrexone implant that is placed under the skin keeps all of the opiates from entering the brain receptors for about 8 to 12 weeks. This gives the patients a head start in remaining drug-free on a permanent basis.

Painkiller Detox

The Coleman Institute uses an outpatient Accelerated Opiate Detoxification process which is also referred to as AOD. This method of detoxification is very comfortable, safe and fast. Other forms of detoxification from narcotics take a long time and the patient is very uncomfortable during detox. The Accelerated Opiate Detoxification process is done as an outpatient and the process is completed within 3 to 5 days. During this process the patient comes to the office daily. The patient is kept under complete supervision; they take sedatives which makes detoxification process much safer and comfortable for the patient. Their success rate with their detox process is 99%.

The Trexone Implant which is a special formulation of Naltrexone is made to release very slowly, this takes place over a six to twelve week period of time. Patients have reported that when they have the Trexone implant their pain is reduced and they have lost the desire to take painkillers. The implant is placed under the patient’s skin, this way the patient doesn’t forget or skip their medication. A licensed pharmacist compounds the implants for the Coleman Institute.

Chronic Pain Management

Individuals that suffer from chronic pain take a lot of pain medications and they’re still in pain. There are many side effects to taking painkillers for chronic pain also. The Coleman Institute has successfully detoxified over 300 patients suffering from chronic pain. Detoxification is completed in about 3 or 4 days using their accelerated detox method. The patient is sedated during the entire process and patients say it’s a very comfortable procedure. The accelerated detox method is safe and very affordable also. Once the detoxification is completed they recommend a Naltrexone implant. Using the implant pain is decreased and the brain heals much quicker.

Suboxone Detox

Suboxone is extremely addictive and is used to relieve heroin or methadone withdrawal symptoms. Sadly there are many patients that are in need of detoxification from Suboxone addiction now. Using Accelerated Detox, the Coleman Institute can detoxify their patients off of large doses of Suboxone within 5 to 8 days. After detox is completed they recommend Naltrexone therapy, this is done as a Naltrexone implant. These implants last for about 6 to 12 weeks which gives the Suboxone patient enough time and a head start in remaining drug free permanently.

Methadone Detox

Many people have become addicted to Methadone after being treated for Heroin or Oxycontin addiction using a Methadone Maintenance Program for treatment. Unfortunately Methadone is much harder to detoxify from compared to Heroin and Oxycontin. Patients that are addicted to Methadone are offered an extended form of Coleman Institutes Accelerated Detox program that takes about 8 days. The patient needs to be in good health, willing to attend on a daily basis, stay in the local area, agree not to drive, and also agree to be fully supervised by someone during the treatment program until the Naltrexone Therapy has begun.

Alcohol Detox

The Coleman Institute has developed a program that safely detoxifies almost all alcoholics; this is done on an outpatient basis over a 3 to 4 day period of time. Their alcohol detoxification program is done as an out-patient program as long as important criteria can be met. This alcohol detox program includes a screening process, IV medications that replenish missing and depleted brain nutrients that the alcohol abuse has caused, and a Phenobarbital challenge.

Following detoxification the patient is educated about the different options for recovery; this includes medications, substance abuse counseling and 12 Step meetings. Coleman Institute has found that for long term alcohol recovery the medications that are most successful include; Naltrexone implants combined with other anti-craving medications like Topamax, Campral and Antabuse.

Benzo Detox

Benzodiazepine detox is also offered at the Coleman Institute, they offer advanced medical treatment for the addiction to benzodiazepines like Xanax. Their method of detox includes Flumazenil which flushes benzodiazepines out of the patients system quick and reduces cravings. There are other Benzodiazepines that The Coleman Institutes treats with their Innovative Therapy which includes;

  • Alprazolam
  • Ativan
  • Chlordiazepoxide
  • Clonazepam
  • Diazepam
  • Klonopin
  • Librium
  • Loprazolam
  • Lorazepam
  • Lormetazepam
  • Mogadon
  • Nitrazepam
  • Oxazepam
  • Restoril
  • Rivotril
  • Serenid
  • Temazepam
  • Valium
  • Xanax

Aftercare Program

Patients are recommended to have Naltrexone therapy for at least 12 months for opiate addiction. If the patient’s recovery is going smoothly with the Naltrexone implant, the patient can usually take oral Naltrexone after using the 12 months of the implants. 12 Step support groups are highly recommended by the Coleman Institute after Detoxification for aftercare as well as intensive outpatient program group therapy sessions. The Coleman Institute believes that all substance abusers are able to achieve long term sobriety, they will do everything they can to support your recovery at any time.
