A Review of Upper Valley Resource and Counseling

Because of the growing need for substance abuse and mental health treatment in Rexburg Idaho the Upper Valley Resource and Counseling Center was established, in 1996. This is a locally owned and operated counseling center that focuses on the residents needs for those that live in the Upper Snake River Valley.

Some of the issues Upper Valley counseling center in Idaho helps people with include depression, anxiety, stress reduction, self-esteem issues, anger management, interpersonal conflict, grief, marriage counseling, pre-marital counseling, abuse, drug and alcohol dependency, mental health, and family counseling.

Upper Valley Resource and Counseling Services

Various services are provided through Upper Valley Resource & Counseling Center which includes Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Counseling, Substance Abuse Treatment and Parent Education.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation is a home and community based program which allows services to be provided to adults and children who are mentally ill in settings where success is most important. This service focuses on helping people develop skills and get the resources they need to increase their ability to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning, and social environments of their choice.

Counseling Services provided include individual, couples, and family counseling to help people experiencing life problems to recognize and implement strategies in order to solve the problems and find satisfaction in their lives.

Couples counseling helps to identify problems that are taking place in relationships. Through couples counseling communication between both parties can be restored which can bring healing and unity in the relationship.

Family counseling helps to identify family patterns that contribute to a behavior disorder or mental illness and break those habits. Sessions can be in groups, in couples or one on one. Family therapy consists of solving problems within the family and strengthening communication.

Individual counseling addresses issues that are problematic for the individual, finding solutions to problems and setting goals to resolve them.

Substance Abuse Treatment includes Individual Therapy, Group Treatment, Motivational Enhancement and Relapse Prevention. Group Treatment involves Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT).This form of therapy helps to move clients from pleasure verses pain reasoning levels to levels where concern for social rules and others become important. There are 7 basic treatment issues MRT focuses on which include:

  1. Confrontation of Beliefs
  2. Attitudes and Behaviors
  3. Assessment of Current Relationships
  4. Reinforcement of Positive Behavior and Habits
  5. Positive Identity Formation
  6. Enhancement of Self-Concept
  7. Decrease in Self-Indulgence
  8. Development of Frustration Tolerance
  9. Development of Higher Stages of Moral Reasoning

Motivational Enhancement is a program that’s designed to help people move through the stages of change and toward changing substance abuse.

Relapse Prevention utilizes the Help Series which is the Hazelden Recovery Plan. With this plan clients learn the core issues in addiction and recovery. They find recovery techniques that are useful and relate to them individually. Clients learn new behaviors that can be used in their daily life that will help them prevent relapse.
